Easter in Kalymnos

Easter in Kalymnos is one of the most intense and authentic experiences of Greek island tradition. It combines the deep religiosity of Orthodox Christianity with unique local customs rooted in the island’s history, traditions, and seafaring life.

Lazarus Saturday

On Lazarus Saturday, all churches distribute Lazarakia — fasting “cookies” made mainly with tahini and cinnamon, shaped like a human figure: Lazarus, the beloved friend of Jesus who was resurrected. In every neighborhood, children sing the carols of Lazarus and collect money or eggs.

Palm Sunday

On Palm Sunday, churches hand out palm leaves crafted into shapes such as crosses, donkeys — the animal that carried Jesus into Jerusalem — and other intricate designs. These are carefully made over several days by the women of each parish with patience and devotion.

Holy Week

From Holy Monday to Good Friday, the island moves in a deeply reverent rhythm. Churches fill with worshippers, and Byzantine chants create a unique atmosphere. Trays of Easter bread and eggs are constantly taken to and from bakeries as households prepare for the Resurrection.

Holy Thursday

On Holy Thursday, after the service of the Twelve Gospels and the Crucifixion of Jesus, parishioners sing the “Lament of the Virgin Mary” in front of the Crucified Christ. The lament continues until the early morning hours, while women decorate the Epitaph — the bier of Christ — with great care.

Good Friday

On Good Friday evening, all the Epitaphs from across the island are carried in procession to the central square. Behind each one, worshippers chant hymns, forming a sea of people accompanying the symbolic tomb of Jesus.

Holy Saturday

On Holy Saturday, during the First Resurrection, effigies of Judas are burned in neighborhoods and outside churches, while firecrackers and dynamite explode everywhere. Wood-fired ovens have been working since early morning, as households prepare mououri — stuffed goat cooked in a special clay pot — which slowly roasts overnight until the Resurrection.

After the proclamation “Christ is Risen”, the celebration erupts with even more fireworks and explosions.

Easter Sunday

On Easter Sunday afternoon, a festive celebration takes place in the central square with traditional dances, fireworks, and dynamite. The noise and light create a unique, almost explosive atmosphere symbolizing the victory of life and joy. This custom is deeply rooted in local tradition and sets Kalymnos apart from other parts of Greece.

Easter in Kalymnos is not only a religious experience but also a social celebration. People of all ages participate, and visitors become part of local life.

Easter in Kalymnos is more than just a holiday — it is a living experience full of emotion, tradition, and intensity. For anyone who experiences it, it remains etched in memory as one of the most authentic moments of Greek culture.
